When there is vegetation, bulky items, mixed construction waste and concrete on the ground, the job starts with zoning and grading — not indiscriminate crushing. The appropriate mineral fraction may be crushed and fractionated at a site for a predetermined application, but compliance does not automatically arise from mechanical processing.

Details

One terrain, different material flows

Trees and stumps, wooden elements, metal, plastics, concrete, bricks, soil and mixed accumulations are not treated as one common mass. Pre-separation keeps the mineral stream clean and allows determining what can be recovered and what must leave the site in the applicable order.

Materials suspected of containing asbestos, tars, oils, hazardous coatings, or other contamination are not fed to the general flow. They are isolated pending identification and resolution by the competent participants.

Where a Construction Waste Management Plan is applicable to the site, work areas, separate collection, quantities and subsequent operations shall be consistent with it. Controlled shredding is part of the implementation of the plan, not a substitute for it.

Traceability links origin, inflow, processing, fractions obtained, quantities and final destination. The necessary tests, evaluations and declarations are determined according to the status of the material and the intended application.

A suitable and controlled mineral fraction can be considered for a backfill, a temporary technological road, a work site or another layer specified by the design. Features, placement and control must meet the requirements of the particular use.

On-site processing can reduce some of the hauling and delivery of new material, but the actual effect depends on the quantities, quality, technology, distances and project. No universal savings rate is promised.
