Forest road with on-site material recycling

How suitable existing rock material can be crushed, graded and reused on site when geology, design and testing permit.

Instead of all the coarse material being hauled away and replaced automatically with an imported fraction, the appropriate part can be processed on site. This shortens the logistics chain when the technical requirements allow it.

How on-site recycling works

The specialized machine crushes the large rock pieces on the track. The resulting material can be distributed, profiled and compacted as part of the road layer, if its characteristics correspond to the design and purpose of the road.

Technology does not mean that every rock available is suitable or that imported material will never be needed. In the case of poor terrain, unsuitable grain size, problematic drainage or higher loads, additional layers and materials may be required.

Where does the potential savings come from?

The actual cost is determined after a comparison between on-site processing and the alternative of hauling, shipping, spreading and compacting. Distances, volumes, machines and design parameters can significantly change the result.

  • the removal of material that can be used is limited;
  • the required amount of imported fraction can be reduced;
  • some of the transport courses and stops are reduced;
  • processing and some logistics remain on-site.

What needs to be confirmed

  1. purpose, expected traffic and period of use of the road;
  2. type and quantity of available material;
  3. fraction, bearing capacity and compaction requirements;
  4. transverse and longitudinal slopes, ditches and culverts;
  5. permissible interventions and restrictions for the specific territory.
